William Morris designed Wandle in 1884 as a furnishing fabric. It was his most ambitious repeat pattern in terms of scale up to that date. Wandle was named after the river that ran through Morris's Merton Abbey works which supplied the water to dye his fabrics. Morris said the pattern was designed 'to honour our helpful stream'.
