Generously opened to us for a private visit with a group from The Arts & Crafts Movement in Surrey, 48 Storey's Way has been lovingly maintained by the current owners. The house was built in 1912 by Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott (1865-1945) for Herbert Ainslie Roberts who was Secretary to the Cambridge University Appointments Board.
Functional and beautiful, it has a series of spacious rooms overlooking the magnificent gardens. All the fittings in the house were designed by Baillie Scott himself, including the light hangings, door latches and window catches. The light filled dining room, with stunning views over the lawn, is a particularly fine room with oak panels and pargetting on the ceiling and frieze. It was particularly gratifying to see that, over the years, the house has retained all it's original features.
Baillie Scott is probably most well known for Blackwell, the grand house he designed on Lake Windermere for the Holt family at the turn of the century. Blackwell is open to the public and is well worth a visit - will post in a later blog about my visit last October!
