Hines of Oxford William Morris Flowerpot Tapestry Footstool
From Hines of Oxford, this fine quality cotton jacquard loom woven handmade tapestry footstool features an adaptation of the Flowerpot design by William Morris. Has wood turned bun feet with traditional brass stud detailing.
Measures 35 cm x 35 cm x 15 cm (14" x 14" x 6").
Tapestry fabric is woven in Flanders by master weavers and the stool is handmade in England.
Designed in 1876, Flowerpot was produced as a small, square embroidery design for cushion covers and fire screens. People could buy them as finished embroideries or as kits to complete at home. They were an inexpensive way of acquiring Morris's work. May Morris, William and Jane's younger daughter, embroidered the original Flowerpot design. May, a talented craftsperson, excelled at embroidery and became Head of Embroidery at Morris & Co. aged just 23.
